Yasunao Tone MP3 Deviation #8  by Yasunao Tone Born in Tokyo in 1935, Yasunao Tone is a multi-disciplinary artist famous for challenging the conventions of digital sound and glitch art. His work mainly involves manipulating digital sound by intentionally disrupting technology in order to produce chaotic,  unconventional, and noisy sounds. His practice involves "wounding" CDs by physically altering or scratching their surface. When these CDs are played, they generate unique, unpredictable, distorted sounds. In contrast to conventional traditional music notes or patterns, Tone's work focuses on creating a glitch effect in sound that is unique and unpredictable. Being influenced by experimental music figures like John Cage, Tone aims to minimize human control from the process of creating sound, allowing machines to generate sound independently.  His disruptive practice of creating sound is evident in his work. An example of this is his work  "MP3 Deviation #6...

Ever Failed. No Matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better." The theatrical performance of the human figures is a reminder for the audience to persevere despite facing failure and hardship and to never give up until the moment you are successful in what you set out to achieve...

Pieter Schoolwerth; Portrait of a Man in Green

Image
Pieter Schoolwerth; Portrait of a Man in Green The painting shows an image of a man in a green collared shirt with green eyes, looking shocked and perhaps afraid. The picture is distorted, as if several digital filters have been applied on top of each other, fragmenting the facial features of the man. Green is used as the dominant color for this painting but shades of brown can be seen breaking through softly to contribute to a theme of being disrupted and disoriented. The distortion in the painting is indicative of many emotions: fear, sadness, and longing. The manipulation in the painting reflects the digital nature of image construction, using layers and manipulation to break down and reassemble forms in a digitally processed manner. The subject in the image is disjointed and abstracted through different filtering processes associated with digital methods. This painting highlights Schoolwerth's ideology that technology completely reshapes human representation and that imag...

Echoes of the Past: The Fluidity of Memory in Danh Vo's Work 2.2.1861 from All your deeds shall in water be writ, but this in marble Danh Vo English Translation: “January 20th, 1861 Very dear, very respected and beloved father, Because my sentence keeps me waiting I want to send you another goodbye which will probably be the last. The days of my imprisonment are passing gently. Everybody around me honors me, a great number [of people] loves me. From the great Mandarin to the last soldier, everybody regrets that the law of the kingdom condemns me to death. I did not have to endure torture, like many of my brothers. A light cut of a saber will separate my head [from my body], like the gardener cuts a spring flower for his pleasure. We are all flowers planted on this earth that god reaps in His due time, some earlier, some later. May it be the purple rose, the maiden lily, or the humble violet. Let’s all try to please the Lord and Master according to the scent or color that is giv...
